May is Older Americans Month — a time to celebrate, honor, and protect the older adults who have shaped our communities and continue to contribute in countless ways. At Shawnee Health, we’re recognizing this important month by highlighting a different social service program each week that supports the health, safety, and dignity of older adults in Southern Illinois.

This week, we shine a light on our Adult Protective Services (APS) program.

Protecting Those Who’ve Paved the Way

As part of Shawnee Health’s Social Service Division, the APS program serves 13 counties in Southern Illinois, providing critical support for older adults and adults with disabilities who may be victims of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Our team of eight full-time investigators, two intake specialists, a supervisor, and a program director work tirelessly to ensure every call is taken seriously and every individual receives the support they deserve.

Although our service area is just a portion of the state, it accounts for 7% of all reports made statewide — a powerful reminder of the need for vigilant, compassionate support right here in our community.

Real Stories, Real Impact

Behind every report is a person — someone’s mother, father, friend, or neighbor — and the APS team is committed to helping each of them navigate difficult, and often heartbreaking, circumstances. Here are just a few examples of how APS has changed lives:

  • A stolen sense of security reclaimed: One older woman had unknowingly become the victim of financial exploitation by her own son. As her Power of Attorney, he abused her trust and emptied her accounts to fuel a gambling addiction — taking over $100,000. When she realized what had happened, she turned to APS. Our team guided her through filing a police report, secured an Order of Protection, and helped her revoke his legal power. We also connected her with Shawnee Alliance’s Volunteer Money Management program, giving her a fresh start and financial stability.
  • A battle for independence defended: An older gentleman was at risk of losing control over his life when his daughter — who lived in another state — attempted to establish guardianship over him in Arkansas. But he lived in Illinois, and he didn’t want or need that level of oversight. APS stood by his side, providing support and testimony via Zoom in court to ensure his rights were protected and the guardianship was ultimately dropped.
  • From unsafe to supported: Another gentleman had been living in a home that had become unsafe and unsanitary following the death of his sister. Alone and in deteriorating conditions, he needed help — and quickly. APS intervened, helping him relocate to a clean, secure housing situation that allowed him to begin rebuilding his life in a safer, more stable environment.
  • Freedom from emotional and financial turmoil: One older man found himself sharing his home with his ex-daughter-in-law, who was causing significant emotional distress and financial strain. Despite an initial attempt to have her leave, the problems continued. APS returned to assist with a second eviction — this time successful — restoring peace and personal space to the man’s home.

These stories are just a snapshot of the meaningful work APS does every day.

More Than a Program — A Lifeline

APS is more than just a resource — it’s a lifeline for older adults facing abuse, neglect, or exploitation. It reflects the very heart of Older Americans Month: ensuring that older adults are respected, protected, and supported as they age.

If you suspect abuse or need help, Shawnee Health’s APS team is here for you. Your call can be the first step in changing a life.
