To improve the quality of life for the large population of migrant farmworkers in Jackson and Union counties, Shawnee Health begins to provide a primary health care program aimed at serving them.

Shawnee Health purchases the facility and assumes practice of a Carbondale OB/GYN provider to allow women of any class to gain access to quality health care. The name is changed to Shawnee Womenโs Health and Family Medicine.
Shawnee Health develops clinics and recruits specialists to the region to help coal miners with the problems of black lung and related disorders. Teaming up with Carbondale Community Highschool, along with other local agencies, Shawnee Health announces the opening of two school-based health centers. School-based health centers provide convenient, affordable, high-quality medical, dental and social services to students, faculty, and members of the school district to promote physical and mental health.
